Set 6

Danton and Frizz

Trizz is a skunk, and Danton insists that skunks aren't pets—but Trizz answers to her name and always comes out when Danton is near. Danton isn't afraid that she'll spray him anymore, especially not after she proudly brought him each of her babies to admire, after they were born. The babies, on the other hand, are not to be trusted, as they are often mischievous. Since Danton's neighbors in Branoli Town don't appreciate Trizz, he doesn't talk about her to anyone.

Gemma and Nix

Gemma and her cat Nix live in a fishing village in Cordica in a huge ramshackle home with Gemma's extended family and often a handful of guests passing through. Like her family, Gemma works in the fishing trade. She likes the hub-bub of family life, but is anxious for next year, when she is of age to marry. Her parents assure her that they've found her an excellent match, but Gemma can't imagine how they did this or who it could be, and is not eager to leave her home and family.

Staniel, Ric, and Roc

Staniel was worried that his dogs wouldn't do well in the dry Cratic Desert, but couldn't turn down the offer to be an architect for the epic Cerapion City development project. Once there, he was relieved that the provided housing was comfortable and that the desert, though intimidating, was liveable once you got to know it. The dogs, Ric and Roc, quickly got popular with the other workers and even inspired changes to the city's design to better accommodate pets.

Henwick and Grisse

Henwick came to Flentorio to research the Toothy Alphonse, but after multiple injuries in the hazardous terrain and one near-death experience with an actual Toothy Alphonse, his zeal for the research faded. Instead, he married a local woman, adopted a cat named Grisse, and settled down to write up his adventures in a book called, "Sometimes It's Better Not to Find What You're Looking For."

Bentla and Bonnie

Bentla keeps a packed calendar hosting elaborate dinners, committee meetings, and out-of-town visitors. Though some think that she takes on airs, since her husband is the mayor of Belltower Bay, those that know her recognize that she is kind, generous, and devoted to her community. Her regal companion, Bonnie, follows at her heels and does her own job of greeting visitors and ensuring that all is in order.

Timothy and Travick

Timothy is a violinist in Esquina. He makes his home in Maror, but travels through the Hills as gigs dictate. He prefers playing at the salons in the grand old homes of Maror. Timothy found Travick the racoon on the riverbank in Lomark City after playing serenades for couples boating by, and named him after his favorite composer. Travick comes to all of Timothy's performances, and can often be found sleeping in Timothy's violin case.

Ursula and Nettles

Ursula works in the accounting office of a shipping company in Cranefish Town. She can remember once being proud and excited to get the job, but now that seems naive. The work is drudgery, the office is always cold, and the pay is never enough.

Perhaps it was the smell of fish that summoned the dog, but Ursula likes to think that Nettles came to save her. Life is better with Nettles sleeping at her feet during the day and walking her home each night.

Antia and Bird

Antia lives in the Overgrowth village of Lemoli. Antia is deaf. Growing up, there were few in the village who took the time to try to communicate with her. Things changed to Antia after sharing her lunch with Bird one afternoon in the woods. Now Bird hops along at her side, taping her when someone approaches and supporting her as able. The villagers have taken note of Bird and their curiosity has led to the beginnings of new attempts at communicating with Antia.

Terrie and Zeb

After Terrie married Harold and moved into his home in a quiet neighborhood in Elowee Town, Pintecho, Harold gave her a cat, the first thing to belong to both of them equally. Terrie was touched by the gesture. They named the cat Zeb and settled into their new routines. In the mornings, Terrie bakes, with Zeb watching from the window sill. In the afternoons, she sings as she works, and Zeb sings back. In the evenings, Terrie and Harold sit together reading, with Zeb purring happily between them.

Farla and Almost

Farla named her bird Almost after all the near misses in her life, the first being that she was almost born on the raft that carried her mother downriver to Omelle. And then there was the time that she'd come face to face with an angry jungle cat that had almost carried her away. Farla collects all these moments in her diary, even the more far-fetched ones, like the time the neighbor boy almost fell in love with her, or the time she almost had the idea for the best novel of all time.

Halva and Gus

Halva is an optimist. When people complain about the cold, dark months in Silver City, she reminds them of the beauty of the mountains and the unique splendor of their home. She has a quote or affirmation ready for every situation. This was a constant irritant to her brother who tried to put a wrinkle in her good humor by gifting her the grouchiest, most intractable cat in Silver City. But if Halva ever noticed Gus' foul moods, she never showed it. Now Gus is a completely devoted companion.

Wissma and Lenzy

Wissma and her cat Lenzy make their home in Polvedo, where Wissma spends as much time as she can painting. She paints portraits of locals and seascapes for visitors; she paints murals for the city and decorates nurseries for newborns. Lenzy dislikes the smell of paint and waits at a distance for Wissma to clean up before approaching, and Wissma is careful never to get paint in Lenzy's fur.

Inka and Rin

Inka and her dog, Rin, live near Topi Village in Swelkar Valley. Topi is off the beaten track, and Inka's house is even further secluded, which is the way she likes it. After spending her childhood as a servant in the temple to the God of Honest Undertakings in Rikolan, Inka wants nothing more than to be away from the judgements of Gods and humankind alike, even if she does keep a small shrine to her God and continues the practice of completing a daily "honest undertaking."

Olive and Garval

Olive lives in Walkia Bluffs with her lizard, Garval. Olive acquired Garval from a traveling wizard in exchange for lodging. The wizard had assured her that Garval was magical, but that was ten years ago, and if it was true she hasn't seen any sign of it. But she doesn't mind. Garval is a good companion, in his own way. Plus, she's sure that she's the only person in Walkia with a lizard like Garval. His uniqueness has inspired her to collect curiosities from all over Jinivar.

Staria and Gem

Staria lives in Sun City in the Xilocent mountains where she works as a potter. She found Gem at the end of winter, half-starved and frozen. She took the little bird into her studio and cared for it. When the warm weather returned, instead of flying away, Gem built a nest in the rafters of Staria’s studio. Each spring a new batch of birds hatch into the world while Staria works way beneath them. She is inspired by their lightness and fragility and tries to translate these qualities into her pottery.
